Product Description

Lithium Where It Finally Makes Sense

You know the drill with small UPS units. You buy a 1500VA box for the network closet. It's got a couple of lead-acid batteries inside. It works fine for a year or two. Then runtime starts dropping. By year three, the batteries barely hold a charge, and you're swapping them outif you remember to check at all. Meanwhile, the thing takes up more room than the switch it's protecting.

The Sun Star Series Li (LV) breaks that cycle. It's a true online double-conversion UPS at the 13kVA scale, but instead of stuffing it with lead, we built it around a lithium-ion battery pack. Same power rating you'd expect in this size, but with up to three times the runtime in roughly half the physical footprint. For shallow network cabinets, wall-mount enclosures, or medical carts where every inch counts, that's not a nice-to-haveit's the difference between fitting and not.

Lithium Longevity: Fewer Swaps, Lower Real Cost

Let's talk about cost the honest way. Lead-acid batteries are cheaper per unit, nobody argues that. But they degrade faster, especially in the warm, tightly-packed spaces where small UPS units tend to live. You replace them every two to three years. Over a ten-year stretch, you've bought the UPS once and the batteries four times. Lithium cells are rated for thousands of cycles, not hundreds. They hold capacity longer, tolerate higher temperatures without the same degradation curve, and just don't need to be touched as often. The upfront price might be higher, but the total cost of ownership over the unit's service life almost always tips the other way.

Online Double Conversion, No Compromises

The Sun Star Li (LV) isn't a line-interactive unit that happens to have a lithium battery. It's a full online UPS, certified IEC62040-3 VFI-SSvoltage and frequency independent, with synchronous tracking. In plain terms: the inverter is always running. Your equipment never sees raw utility power. When the grid sags, surges, or drops entirely, there's no transfer. Zero. The output sine wave doesn't twitch.

That matters for the kind of gear you're plugging in at this size: edge computing nodes, point-of-sale servers, lab instruments, sensitive network electronics. Stuff that logs every power event and flags it for an auditor.

Three-Level Inverter: Handles the Weird Loads

Most small UPS units use a two-level inverter design. It works fine for resistive loads and modern switching power supplies, but throw in a half-wave rectifierlike the one inside a cheap laser printer, an LED sign, or a solenoid valveand they can choke. The waveform distorts. Voltage sags. The UPS might even fault.

The Sun Star Li (LV) uses a three-level inverter topology. The switching is smoother, the output cleaner. It handles half-wave rectifier loads without drama. Small induction motors? Also fine. You could plug in a small fan, a tiny compressor, or some oddball piece of equipment that makes a standard UPS beep angrily, and it'll just keep running.

Efficiency That Doesn't Punish You on the Power Bill

Running a small online UPS 24/7 can get expensive if the efficiency numbers are lousy. The Sun Star Li (LV) pulls 93% in full online mode, which is respectable for this class. But if you flip it into ECO mode on a day when the grid is stable, efficiency jumps to 97%. You still have the inverter spinning and ready; it's just not running the load full-time. The moment the utility wobbles, it snaps back to double conversion. For a unit that might sit in a kiosk or a remote closet for years, those four extra points can add up.

BMS Integration That Actually Talks Back

This is where the Sun Star Li (LV) separates itself from just about everything else in the 13kVA bracket. It doesn't just have a lithium batteryit has a proper Battery Management System with dedicated communication channels.

You get two interfaces: a Dry Contact port and a ModBUS (RS485) connection. Both talk directly to the BMS inside the battery pack. On the ModBUS side, you can pull real-time data: individual cell voltages, state of charge, state of health, temperature, estimated remaining runtime. Not guesses. Not bar graphs. Actual numbers.

And the two interfaces work as redundant paths. If one communication line goes down, the other keeps reporting. No single point of failure in the monitoring chain. For a small UPS, that's an unusual level of visibility. It means you can integrate the unit into a building management system, a remote telemetry dashboard, or an industrial controller and actually know what the battery is doing without sending someone to look at a blinking light.

Charging That Adapts to Your Battery

The built-in charger uses a four-stage algorithm: constant current, constant voltage, floating, then turn-off. That's standard practice for lithium to avoid overcharging and keep cycle life high. But the logic is customizable. If you're working with a custom battery packmaybe you want extra runtime and have a specific cell configurationthe charging parameters can be adjusted to match. You're not locked into a one-size-fits-all curve.

Wide Input Window Saves the Battery

The input voltage range runs from 65V to 145V, and the frequency range spans 40 to 70Hz. That's intentionally wide. The idea is simple: stay on utility power as long as possible, no matter how dirty the grid gets. Every minute the UPS runs on AC instead of battery is a minute of battery life preserved for a real blackout. For deployments in regions with unreliable powerrural areas, developing markets, older buildings with flaky servicethis input tolerance means the unit isn't constantly cycling its battery over minor voltage dips.

Build Quality: The Unseen Stuff

Pop the lid on a Sun Star Li (LV) and you'll find FR4 glass fiber PCBs with conformal coating. That's not marketing fluff; it means the circuit boards resist moisture and dust better than standard phenolic boards. Components are large-span, chosen to handle thermal cycling without cracking solder joints. The ventilation paths are designed to pull air through the unit while keeping dust accumulation to a minimum. These are the kinds of choices that don't make the spec sheet but show up three years later when the unit is still running quietly in a hot, dusty electrical room.

Customizable for Integration

The controller inside is powerful enough that we've left it open for customization. If you need the UPS to integrate into an automatic control system, a smart grid application, or a custom supervisory platform, it can be done. The architecture isn't locked down. That's useful for OEMs, system integrators, and anyone building a larger energy management solution who doesn't want the UPS to be the black box that doesn't talk to anything.

Where You'll Find It

The Sun Star Li (LV) fills a specific niche: small critical loads that need the protection of online double conversion but would benefit from lithium's footprint and longevity. Think edge computing nodes in retail back offices. Medical carts that move between rooms and can't be saddled with heavy lead batteries. Kiosks and digital signage in transit stations. Network closets in branch offices where IT staff visit twice a year. Small server rooms that don't have a dedicated UPS cabinet and need something shallow enough to fit a wall-mount rack.

It's the compact sibling to the larger Sun Star LV series, sharing the same intelligent battery management and three-level inverter architecture, just scaled to the 13kVA range. If you've been limping along with lead-acid UPS units that take up too much space and need batteries every two years, this is the upgrade that actually changes the math.
